Dry Needle Therapy
Dry Needle uses a solid filiform needle to treat muscle conditions such as pain or myofascial trigger points. Another name for the Dry Needle is the “Intramuscular stimulation”. The technique of Dry Needle is similar to Acupuncture, but this one can be used by Physical Therapists.
How is it Used?
Dry Needle is an invasive procedure where Physical Therapists apply the needle directly into the skin and muscle directly at the myofascial trigger point. The Therapist’s aim in this procedure is to apply the Dry Needle directly on the trigger point where there are multiple contraction knots that are related to the production and maintenance of the pain cycle.
Effect Of Dry Needle?
The effect of this procedure is the production of a local twitch response (an involuntary spinal cord reflex in which the muscle fibers in the taut band of muscle contract); this response indicates the proper placement of the needle in a trigger point thus improving the treatment outcomes by activating endogenous opioids. The Physical Therapists needs training in order to hit the myofascial trigger point, and not to cause pain to the patient during the procedure; pain can be common with a beginner Physical Therapist in Dry Needling who needs more training and practice.
Who Can Be Treated With Dry Needle?
- All forms of Tendinitis and Tendinopathies – for example (Tennis elbow) (jumper’s knee)
- Calcification symptoms for example (Plantar fasciitis-heel spurs)
- Muscle spasms and contractures
- Acute and chronic pain
- Symptoms caused by Intervertebral Disc disorders
- Myofascial trigger points
- Paresthesia of the upper and lower limbs
